Once registered (a one time action) you have to identify to the nickserv if you want it to recognize you. You can do this best when you have connected to the chat server. This is one time action per server connection.
Once identified the nick service bot recognizes who you are and this gives you more options with the nickserv bot and the chanserv bot. For example, you can then register your own chat channel.
/msg nickserv identify mypass
Of course, replace mypass with your secret password which you set when you registered for the nickname.
