IRC How-To

Due to the fact that a few users requested help in the IRC Chat forum on these boards, I have written this small How-To so the members who don't know how to use IRC and want to join our IRC channel, or any other one, can do so.

I - Software you can use:
The most popular IRC client used in Windows is mIRC, found at http://www.mirc.com
There are a lot of other scripts and add-ons for mIRC that would suit your needs which you can find on the Internet.
For Linux, there are several clients installed by default in Linux distributions: XChat, KSirc etc.
Those who can't run an IRC client can use the Java chat applet.

II - Using mIRC:
After downloading and installing mIRC you need to configure your client and choose the IRC server you will connect to.

1. From Tools, select Options

2. The Options screen should come up. There, under Connect, you can enter some details but usually it's better to just enter something fake in there if you want to stay annonymous.
You can also use the 'New server window' option if you are already connected to another server and wish to connect to another one.

3. In Servers, you can choose the IRC server you want to connect to.
Our network is not in the list, but you can add it with 'Add'.
Details are:
Description: vBFans IRC
IRC Server: irc.vbulletin-fans.com
Port: 6667
Group: vBFans
There is no password needed so just leave that field blank.
If you are already connected to another server, to connect to vBFans you can type /server -m irc.vbulletin-fans.com in the status window.

4. Once you have connected to the server from Connect, you will need to register a handle (unique username to connect to vBFans user system) with /msg nickserv REGISTER pass email where pass is your password and email is your email address. This will register your currently used nick.

If you connect another time, to auth you need to type /msg nickserv IDENTIFY pass .To make your life easier, you can put that command in your IRC Perform list, so it is executed every time you connect to Dev|Core by going to Tools -> Options -> Connect -> Options -> Perform. You choose vBFans from the list then you type the AUTH command replacing 'handle' and 'pass' with your details.

5. After you have connected to vBFans, to join our channel type /join #vbfans
NOTE: If the channel is password protected, you must enter the password to enter it, like this: /join #channel password , where password is the channel's password.

III - Basic IRC commands you can use:
-- /quit - quits the client
-- /me - types text as an action. (example: '/me eats' will show as 'RN_Evil eats')
-- /nick <new_nick> - changes your nick
-- /kick <nick> - If you are opped (have the @ sign before your name) you can get someone out of the channel
-- /ban <nick> - If you are opped you can restrict someone from entering the channel
-- !kick <nick> - If you are opped you can make ChanServ kick someone
-- !ban <nick> - If you are opped you can make ChanServ ban someone

Great introduction for those who are not really familiar with the whole chat thing.

Hopefully this will make it a bit easier :)

I hope so. I tried to keep it simple so everyone should be able to come in our channel using mIRC.

Most of the other commands are network specific. I didn't want to cover network specific commands because the How-To would've got too cluttered.

Gee... Thanks for this article. Atleast a person who has never used all this stuff is gonna try it once!
